HOW TO PERFORM 24 HOURS IMMERSION COLD WATER TEST (IS 5454: 1976) ?

OBJECTIVE

To determine the water absorption and coefficient of saturation of burnt clay building brick.

APPARATUS

1. Ventilated Oven: Maintain at constant temperature at 110-115 °C
2. Boiling water arrangement
3. Water Tub
4. Dump Cloth
5. A sensitive balance capable of weighing with in 0.1 % of the mass of the specimen

  • The number of  specimens shall be selected according to the IS: 5454: 1976
  • The dimension shall be measured to the nearest of 1 mm.

    PROCEDURE

Dry bricks are put in an oven weight (Wo) of the bricks is recorded after cooling them to room temperature. The bricks are then immersed in water at a temperature of 27° ± 2°C for n at a temperature of 105° to 115°C till these attain constant mass. The w24 hours. The specimens are then taken out of water and wiped with a damp cloth. Three minutes, thereafter it is weighed again and recorded as Wc

The average water absorption shall not be more than 20 per cent by weight upto class 12.5 and 15 per cent by weight for higher classes.
