The bonds in brick masonry is developed by the mortar filling between layers of bricks and in grooves when bricks are laid adjacent to each other and in layers in walls. cement mortar is the mostly used material for bond in bricks masonry
In brick masonry wall construction, types of bonds are classified based on laying and bonding styles of bricks in wall.
most common bond types used in brick masonry:
1) Stretcher bond
2) English bond
3) Header bond
4) Flemish bond
STRETCHER BOND
In a modular brick of size 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm the longer narrow face of the brick with dimension 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm is called a stretcher bond, also called as running bond, is created when bricks are laid with only their stretchers showing, overlapping midway with the courses of bricks below and above.
uses
They are suitably used only for one-half brick thick walls such as for the construction half brick thick partition wall.
ENGLISH BOND
english bond to be the strongest bond. hence it is commonly used for walls of all thickness. to be break continuity of vertical joints of brick is cut length wise into two halves and used in beginning and used of a wall after header. this is called queen closer.
HEADER BOND
standard brick header bond is 90 mm × 90 mm face. .In header bond brick masonry all the bricks are arranged in the header courses. In header bonds, the overlap is kept equal to half width of the brick. To achieve this, three quarter brick bats are used in alternate courses as quoins.
use
header bond is used for the construction of walls with full brick thickness which measures 180 mm.
FLEMISH BOND
In flemish bond each course comprises of alternate header and stretcher. Alternate courses start with stretcher and header. To break the vertical joints queen closers are required to add, if a course starts with header. Every header is centrally supported on the stretcher below it.
Flemish bonds have better appearance but are weaker than English bonds for load bearing wall construction. Thus, if the pointing has to be done for brick masonry walls, then Flemish bond may be used for better aesthetic view. If the walls have to be plastered, then it is better to use English bond.
The thickness of Flemish bond is minimum one full brick.
TYPES OF FLEMISH BONDS:
Single Flemish Bond
In single flemish bond construction, outer faces of walls have flemish look whereas inner faces have look of English bond.
Minimum thickness required for single Flemish bond is one and a half brick thickness.
Double Flemish Bond
Double Flemish Bond has the same appearance both in the front and back elevations, i.e. each course consists of alternate header and stretcher. This type of bonding is comparatively weaker than English bond.
Note:- Construction of flemish bond needs greater skill. It gives more pleasing appearance. But in comparision of english bond, it is not as strong as English bond. If only pointing is to be used for finished wall, flemish bond may be used to get good aesthetic appearance. If u are going to plastering the wall then it is better to use English bond.
